چکیده

The method for the extinction correction based on the gas column density is tested. A positive correlation is found between the total gas column density and the extinction estimated using amodel based on energy conservation (‘frequencyconverter model’). Assuming a Solar Neighbourhood opticaldepth–to–gas ratio, extinction is predicted from the gas column density using a radiative transfer model which adopts a ‘Sandwich’ configuration for the stellar and dust distributions, and which takes also into account the effect of scattering. This prediction agreeswellwith the extinction estimated from the energy conservation consideration. This indicates that (1) the method for the extinction correction based on the gas column density is a robust one; (2) in the inner part of galaxy disks where most of the extinction occurs, the dust-to-gas ratio is on average about the same as the Solar Neighbourhood value. Our results also suggest that dust grains associatedwith both gas phases (HI and H2) participate in the extinction, with a relative importance depending on the abundance of the gas phase in the inner disk. For most of the galaxies in our sample the extinction is mainly due to the dust associated with the molecular gas because they have high molecular to atomic gas column density ratios. On the other hand, for galaxies whose gas column density is dominated by the atomic gas, the extinction seems to be mainly caused by the dust associated with atomic gas.

The Extinction Law in an Occulting Galaxy

We measure the extinction law in a galaxy’s spiral arm and interarm regions using a visual and infrared (BVRJHK) imaging study of the interacting galaxies NGC 2207 and IC 2163. This is an overlapping spiral galaxy pair in which NGC 2207 partially occults IC 2163. This geometry enables us to directly measure the extinction of light from the background galaxy as it passes through the disk of the ...

Recent studies of nearby spiral galaxies suggest that photodissociation regions (PDRs) are capable of producing much of the observed HI in galaxy disks. In that case, measurements of the observed HI column density and the far–ultraviolet (FUV) photon flux responsible for the photodissociation process provide a new probe of the volume density of the local underlying molecular hydrogen. We develo...

The Relationship between Gas Content and Star Formation in Molecule-rich Spiral Galaxies

We investigate the relationship between H I, H2, and the star formation rate (SFR) using azimuthally averaged data for seven CO-bright spiral galaxies. Contrary to some earlier studies based on global fluxes, we find that ΣSFR exhibits a much stronger correlation with ΣH2 than with ΣHI, as ΣHI saturates at a value of ∼ 10 M⊙ pc or even declines for large ΣSFR. Hence the good correlation between...

Internal Extinction in Spiral Galaxies in the Near Infrared

In order to study the effects of internal extinction in spiral galaxies we search for correlations of near infrared (NIR) photometric parameters with inclination. We use data from the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) Extended Source Catalog (XSC) on 15,224 spiral galaxies for which we also have redshifts. For 3035 of the galaxies, I-band photometry is available which is included in the analysis....

Density Distribution Function from H

The cross-section of sky occupied by a particular neutral hydrogen column density (NHI) provides insight into the nature of Lyα absorption systems. We have measured this column density distribution at z=0 using 21-cm Hi emission from a blind survey. A subsample of HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) galaxies have been imaged with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The contribution of l...
